Former B.C. Mountie charged with sharing sensitive information

Investigators allege he shared protected materials with a person he was in a relationship with, and say no current probes were compromised.

  • On Thursday, the RCMP arrested former officer Michael Scoretz, 47, on 13 charges stemming from his work with the Pacific Region Integrated National Security Enforcement Team between August 2020 and February 2023.
  • Prosecutors charged Scoretz with six counts of Unauthorized Communication of Special Operational Information under the Security of Information Act and seven counts of breach of trust after he allegedly stored work materials at his Bowen Island home and shared classified data with a relationship partner.
  • The RCMP confirmed the charges involve no current national security investigations and that no operations were compromised. Scoretz retired from the force last year after a 16-year career beginning in 2009.
  • Inspector Bryan Pyatt of Pacific Region INSET described the allegations as "deeply troubling" and "unsettling," emphasizing the agency's commitment to hold individuals "accountable no matter their employment or background." The matter is now before the courts.
  • Federal statutes prescribe up to 14 years in prison for unauthorized communication of special operational information. The RCMP stated they will not release further details as the case proceeds through the legal system.
