Bosch to Spin Off Semiconductor Division in January 2028
Bosch will open chip manufacturing to outside customers as it seeks to lift annual semiconductor sales to about €5 billion by 2030.
- On Tuesday, German automotive supplier Bosch announced it will move its semiconductor business into a dedicated unit effective January 2028, remaining part of the parent company.
- The company targets annual semiconductor revenue of around 5 billion euros by 2030, seeking to expand beyond automotive markets into robotics, factory automation, and AI data centres.
- Erik Rein, who heads Bosch's chip business, stated "The firm will increasingly open its manufacturing capacities to external partners," operating a network of around 40 semiconductor sites worldwide.
- Bosch leverages a more than 60-year semiconductor history, producing silicon carbide chips and MEMS sensors. Deputy chairman Markus Heyn said sensors are "the key" to products and "the technological basis" for innovations.
- This move comes as carmakers grapple with chip supply risks and dependence on limited suppliers; by diversifying, Bosch aims to help Europe manage systemic challenges while expanding market reach.
