Greggs, Boots and M&S team up with Met Police to tackle shoplifters
The system has lifted criminal disposals to 29.4% from 7.3% and lets officers get CCTV in minutes, the Met said.
- On Tuesday, The Metropolitan Police expanded a shoplifting evidence platform to eight additional London boroughs, including Southwark and Lambeth, enabling retailers like Boots and Greggs to submit CCTV footage directly to officers.
- By enabling direct digital submissions, the software reduces CCTV waiting times from up to 28 days to minutes, and The Met reports this process increased criminal disposals from 7.3 per cent to 29.4 per cent.
- Julie Murphy, vice president for Boots London and travel division, said the retailer is committed to partnering with the force, while Michael Belgrave, 55, was sentenced to nine months imprisonment for stealing more than 4,000 worth of goods.
- Reported shoplifting offences across London are down by almost 4 per cent, Chief Inspector Rav Pathania said, though the force remains focused on using the technology to catch offenders.
- Expanding to boroughs like Croydon and Hillingdon aims to bolster investigations, marking a broader effort to integrate digital security operations with traditional police workflows across London.
