Boelo: Met Office names second storm to hit UK in 24 hours
Forecasters warn of gusts up to 80 mph, with power cuts, transport disruption and heavy rain expected across Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.
The Met Office upgraded its warning for Storm Boelo to amber across Scotland, effective from 9pm on Saturday until 9pm on Sunday, threatening 80mph gusts and "danger to life" conditions.
Following Storm Austen's heavy rain on Friday, meteorologists note that storms often develop in clusters during unsettled Atlantic weather, fueled by sharp temperature contrasts that strengthen low-pressure systems.
Organisers cancelled major events including the Paisley Halloween Festival and The Enchanted Forest at Pitlochry, while 14 of CalMac's 30 ferry services were halted and rail lines across western and northern Scotland closed.
Social Justice and Housing Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville chaired a Scottish Government Resilience Room meeting on Friday to coordinate the response, as Edinburgh Castle and city gardens closed for public safety.
The strongest winds will spread eastwards overnight, with conditions expected to ease from the west through Sunday; the Met Office warns that flying debris and power cuts remain likely throughout the weekend.
