Once-Weekly Drug Demonstrates Promising Dual Benefits in Obesity and Metabolic Health
Boehringer said the drug cut weight by up to 16.6% and reduced liver fat by up to 63.1% in Phase III trials.
- At the American Diabetes Association 2026 Scientific Sessions in New Orleans on Sunday, Boehringer Ingelheim presented positive Phase III results for its investigational dual glucagon/GLP-1 receptor agonist, survodutide.
- The SYNCHRONIZE-1 and SYNCHRONIZE-MASLD trials evaluated survodutide in adults living with obesity or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease , conditions associated with serious long-term health risks including cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
- Data from the 76-week SYNCHRONIZE-1 study showed participants achieved up to 16.6% body weight reduction with survodutide 6 mg versus 3.2% with placebo; the 48-week SYNCHRONIZE-MASLD trial showed 84.2% achieved at least 30% liver fat reduction versus 24.3% with placebo.
- Lead author Dr. Carel le Roux stated, "There is a critical need for treatments that drive meaningful improvements in overall metabolic health," noting improved outcomes help reduce serious complications linked to obesity.
- Boehringer plans to initiate studies later this year, including SYNCHRONIZE-HERA and ELEVATE-LIVER, to explore survodutide's impact on women's health and cardiac function; survodutide remains investigational and unapproved.
