‘Doom’s Legendary Composer Bobby Prince Has Died, Aged 81
The composer’s Doom soundtrack was selected for preservation in the Library of Congress, and the Video Game Industry honored his lifetime of work.
Robert Caskin Prince III, the legendary composer behind the iconic Doom soundtrack, died at age 81 on Tuesday, June 16, his family confirmed.
Prior to his influential career in The Video Game Industry, Prince served as a platoon leader in the Vietnam War and pursued professional roles in counseling and law.
Prince collaborated with Apogee Software on landmark titles including Duke Nukem, Wolfenstein, and the Commander Keen series, shaping the aggressive tone of early shooters.
John Romero, co-designer of the original Doom, said, "Everyone at Romero Games is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Bobby Prince. He left an incredible mark on games and on my life."
Last month, the Doom soundtrack was inducted into the National Recording Registry, which preserves recordings considered "culturally, historically, or aesthetically important", marking a major achievement.
