Bob Weihe, Also Known as 'Derby Bob,' Dies at 89
David Begnaud’s social media post helped secure tickets for the hospice patient, who attended the 152nd Run for the Roses before dying a week later.
Bob Weihe, the 89-year-old Louisville man affectionately known as "Derby Bob," has died after recently fulfilling his final wish to attend the 152nd Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
Weihe had been living in hospice care and recently shared that his final desire was to continue his decades-long tradition of attending the annual Kentucky Derby event.
After CBS News correspondent David Begnaud highlighted his story on social media, Churchill Downs provided tickets; photos showed Weihe smiling alongside Begnaud celebrating the 152nd Run for the Roses on Derby Day.
WLKY spoke with Weihe on Monday after he attended the Derby, and he reflected that "It all just seemed to fall into place."
Weihe's death occurred exactly one week after his return to Churchill Downs, marking the completion of his final and most meaningful trip to the event.
