Germany at Risk of Violent Conflict with Russia, Intel Chief Says
Martin Jaeger said Russia is using drones, cyberattacks and sabotage to pressure Germany and other European democracies, with no sign of a major NATO attack.
On Monday, Martin Jaeger, head of the Bundesnachrichtendienst , warned lawmakers in Berlin that Germany risks being drawn into a violent conflict with Russia amid an escalating 'shadow war' of hybrid attacks.
Authorities have repeatedly accused Moscow of orchestrating a hybrid campaign of drone and cyberattacks, citing an attempted attack on Leipzig airport in August as evidence of escalating concrete threats.
Jaeger described Germany as 'one of the main obstacles to Russia's hegemonic projection of power,' arguing that Berlin has become a primary target for Russian intelligence operations, sabotage, and political interference.
In an Oct 1 address, Russian President Vladimir Putin denied plans to attack NATO, stating, 'We have no intention of attacking anyone,' though he warned Russia would respond if subjected to aggression.
The BND chief warned Germany must prepare for further intimidation, including potential nuclear threats and attempts to weaken European support for Ukraine, as Moscow continues pressuring governments to avoid decisions against Russian interests.
