Two men dead after attempted small boat Channel crossing
Two men died and two women were hospitalized with burns while attempting to cross the English Channel overnight from Sunday to Monday, French authorities reported.
La Voix du Nord, a regional French newspaper, reported the women's burns resulted from a chemical reaction between gasoline and seawater; the deaths bring Franco-British maritime border fatalities to at least 24 this year.
Last week, another crossing resulted in three deaths, including a 10-year-old child, underscoring the dangers of hazardous journeys in unstable rubber dinghies that smugglers charge thousands of dollars to arrange.
Separately, 149 migrants arrived at Gosport marina late Sunday, where Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary imposed conditions under the Public Order Act amid an anti-migrant protest.
The Boulogne-sur-Mer public prosecutor has opened an investigation into the deaths, while The Home Office stated The Border Security Command continues processing small boat arrivals in Kent.
