BMW recalls hundreds of thousands of cars over fire risk
BMW is recalling up to 575,000 vehicles worldwide due to a faulty starter relay that may cause fire risk, with 28,582 affected in Germany alone, the company said.
- BMW confirmed to AFP on Feb 11 that it is launching a global safety recall affecting a mid-six-figure number of cars and will write to owners to replace potentially faulty starters.
- A manufacturing defect in the starter's magnetic switch can develop after extensive start cycles, affecting vehicles with starter relays made between July 2020 and July 2022.
- In Germany, 28,582 cars are being recalled, alongside 24,732 in the UK and 197 in Ireland, for models produced between July 2020 and July 2022.
- BMW Group UK will notify registered keepers by post using DVSA data, advising owners not to leave engines running unattended after remote engine start, and said the recall should have little earnings impact.
- Industry reports, including from kfz-betrieb, suggested about 575,000 cars might be affected though BMW did not confirm that figure, following a 2024 1.5 million-vehicle recall.
