Dolphin Rescued From Shallow Lagoon in South Carolina
BLUFFTON, SOUTH CAROLINA, JUL 16 – Rescuers used a specially designed tarp to safely move Lucky, a 7-foot-10-inch, 500-pound dolphin, back to deeper waters after she became stranded by heavy rains and tides.
- Over the weekend, a female dolphin approximately 7 feet 10 inches long and weighing between 400 and 500 pounds was discovered trapped in a shallow tidal lagoon within the Hampton Lake community; she has been identified by researchers as Lucky.
- During heavy rainfall and elevated tides on Thursday, Lucky is believed to have entered the lagoon via an underground passage linking it to the May River, where she then became stranded in shallow water about 2 to 3 feet deep.
- Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network alerted Bluffton firefighters and a rescue team from Charleston that used a marine rescue tarp to corral Lucky and safely lift her from the lagoon.
- A team of eight people moved Lucky approximately 75 yards up a steep slope to a trailer, which then transported her 2 to 3 miles to a private dock where she was released into deeper areas of the May River.
- Lauren Rust of LMMN called the rescue a “textbook example of interagency teamwork,” noting that responders, firefighters, and community members all played vital roles in Lucky's safe return.
