Blue Jays place pitcher José Berríos on injured list with sore elbow
The Toronto Blue Jays have placed right-handed pitcher José Berríos on the 15-day injured list because of inflammation in his right elbow, marking the first time in his decade-long MLB career that he has been sidelined with an injury.
Berríos had pitched through elbow issues for some time, and the team scheduled an MRI to assess the injury and its link to his recent decline in performance.
Before being placed on the injured list, Berríos made 30 starts this season, compiling a 9-5 record with a 4.17 ERA. However, he struggled in September, posting a 6.75 ERA over four appearances, one of which included two relief innings in a 7-1 loss to the Red Sox.
Manager John Schneider noted that the player was definitely pushing through the difficulties and mentioned that the MRI results will provide more clarity, but it likely relates in some way to his recent performance issues.
Berríos’ injury deepens challenges for the Blue Jays as the team has lost six of seven games, tying with the Yankees atop the AL East while rookie Paxton Schultz was called up to fill a bullpen role.
