Bloomberg: China plans $295bn spend for nationwide data centre build-out
The five-year plan would link computing hubs with the power grid and give state firms and local suppliers a central role, sources said.
- China is planning to spend around $295bn over the next five years to build a nationwide network of data centers, Bloomberg reported, citing sources close to the matter.
- This initiative forms part of the "six networks" program announced earlier this year, designed to create a resilient AI industry with reduced reliance on foreign technology from Nvidia and AMD.
- Local suppliers, including Huawei, are to be tapped for at least 80pc of required technology, while state-run China Mobile and China Telecom will manage a majority of the data centers.
- China's core AI industry boasted more than 6,200 companies valued at nearly $174bn in 2025, with International Data Corporation projecting the broader sector could cross $200bn by 2029.
- Beijing-Based efforts to protect home-grown technology coincide with restrictions on US-made chips, following recent government pressure on Meta regarding Chinese-founded AI company Manus.
