Blanchard hits 40-yard walk-off field goal to lift Elks past Blue Bombers 22-19
Blanchard’s 40-yard kick capped a 22-19 comeback after Edmonton erased a 16-point deficit, and the Elks improved to 8-3.
On Friday, the Edmonton Elks defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 22-19 in front of 22,805 at Commonwealth Stadium, marching back to seal the victory as time expired.
Winnipeg established an early 16-0 lead as quarterback Zach Collaros connected with Tim White on a 30-yard touchdown pass, while Edmonton responded with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Austin Mack before halftime.
Edmonton rallied in the second half as kicker Blanchard made a 42-yard field goal to start the third quarter, and quarterback Cody Fajardo tied the game with a one-yard keeper late in the third before Blanchard added a 34-yard field goal with six minutes remaining.
Kicker Sergio Castillo kept Winnipeg competitive with 52-yard and 53-yard field goal attempts, setting a franchise record with 42 career field goals of 50-plus yards, surpassing Troy Westwood.
The Elks head into a bye week before facing Calgary on Sept. 7, while the Blue Bombers host the Montreal Alouettes on Aug. 29 for Military Appreciation Night.
