They Were Promised New Septic Tanks. Trump Called It ‘Illegal DEI’
The move halts federal funding for septic tanks in a county where more than 50,000 people still live with raw sewage.
- Soon after returning to office last year, President Donald Trump's Justice Department ended a Lowndes County settlement, labeling it "illegal DEI." The administration also scuttled a separate $14 million EPA grant earmarked for septic systems and workforce training across Lowndes, Hale, and Wilcox counties.
- Three years ago, the Biden administration concluded Alabama failed to address a sanitation crisis disproportionately affecting Black residents of Lowndes County. The state agreed to an interim settlement that unlocked federal funding for septic tanks capable of handling the region's dense soil.
- Today, more than 50,000 people in the Black Belt region pipe raw sewage into open trenches and pits. Nonprofit groups have been installing septic tanks, but without federal funding, they lack resources to effect lasting change across the region.
- "We have a solution, but it takes funding," said Sherry Bradley, executive director of the Black Belt Unincorporated Wastewater Program. Bradley warned that without federal support, the sanitation crisis will not be solved.
- The Trump administration cites Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to justify ridding the federal government of DEI initiatives. Officials threaten state and private institutions with defunding if they do not comply with these new mandates.
