BJP names candidates for Nandigram, Rejinagar bypolls in Bengal; mother of CM Suvendu's slain aide to contest
On Tuesday, The Bharatiya Janata Party announced candidates for the October 6 bypolls in West Bengal, fielding Hasirani Rath for Nandigram and Sakharav Sarkar for the Rejinagar Assembly seat.
Rath, the 62-year-old mother of late aide Chandranath Rath, maintains a long-standing political bond with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and previously served as Karmadhyaksha for Child and Women Development at the Chandipur Panchayat Samiti.
Nandigram remains a significant battleground after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari vacated the seat; Rath faces five candidates including Sanchita Pradhan of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress and Milan Pradhan of The Congress.
Sarkar, a former Murshidabad district BJP president, contests the Rejinagar seat vacated by Aam Janata Unnayan Party founder Humayun Kabir, facing opposition from the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress , The Congress, and the Left Front.
Voters will head to the polls on October 6 to decide the outcome in both constituencies, with the Election Commission scheduling vote counting for October 9.
