German Birth Rate Falls to Lowest Point in Almost 20 Years
GERMANY, JUL 17 – Germany’s birth rate fell 2% to 1.35 children per woman in 2024, the lowest since 2006, with slower decline compared to steeper drops in 2022 and 2023, officials said.
- Germany's fertility rate fell to 1.23 children per woman in 2024, marking its lowest level since 1996 according to the Federal Statistical Office's July 17 report.
- Researchers attribute this decline to widespread insecurity among couples, caused by ongoing crises and compounded by a lack of nurseries and kindergartens, which delays childbearing decisions.
- In 2024, 677,117 children were born in Germany, a 2% decrease from the previous year, continuing a multi-year downward trend following steeper declines of 7% and 8% in 2023 and 2022.
- Women with foreign citizenship have a higher fertility rate of 1.84 children per woman, about 50% more than German women, though the foreign-born fertility rate has also been declining since 2017.
- The ongoing drop in fertility rates in Germany is causing concern for the country's demographic future and the stability of its economic and social structures, as the average number of children per woman remains significantly lower than what is needed to maintain the population size.
