Binman Tells All UK Households to Make Food Bin Change Urgently
Ashley, known as The No1 Binman, said numbered lids help crews return bins and reduce losses as households prepare for windy weather.
Ashley, known on TikTok as The No1 Binman, urged households to mark outdoor food waste bins with house numbers before autumn gales arrive, ensuring collectors return containers to the correct property.
Empty food waste containers weigh very little, making them prone to blowing away in high winds. Ashley said, "It's not the bin men's fault, it's because they don't weigh a lot."
Householders can purchase weather-resistant numbers for lids, helping crews spot them during early morning rounds; look for sizes around 10cm to 14cm high, which fit smaller food waste bins better.
If bins are not retrieved immediately, they may end up "a million miles down the road." Ashley noted that labels can be applied to both food waste containers and general rubbish bins alike.
Beyond outdoor containers, guidance suggests emptying kitchen caddies every two to three days during autumn to prevent odours as central heating turns on. Residents should also allow hot food scraps to cool completely before disposal.
