Trump Signs Order to Limit Child Vaccinations
Health leaders said the order could make shots harder for families and noted Montana has reported 41 measles cases since last year.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday limiting childhood vaccinations to 11 immunizations, down from 18, and directed Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy to submit an implementation plan within 90 days.
Montana health leaders stated the order has not changed current CDC guidance. John Forte, executive director of RiverStone Health in Billings, dismissed the proposal as "purely political theater" from a public health perspective.
Forte criticized the feasibility of rapid vaccine development, stating "those things take years, almost decades." Anne Landgji, co-director of Montana Families for Vaccines, warned that 41 measles cases reported since last year show "misleading information" fuels outbreaks.
Montana had reported 41 measles cases since last year, ending 35 years without incidents. Landgji emphasized that "messing with school immunization requirements" remains unpopular even among conservative Republican voters in the state.
With back-to-school season underway, Forte and Landgji recommended shared decision-making with doctors to build personalized vaccine plans. They stressed the order fails to respect "the sacred relationship that should exist between medical providers and individual patients.
