Back-to-work legislation to end Alberta teachers’ strike coming Monday, says premier

Bill 2 aims to end a strike involving 51,000 teachers and return roughly 750,000 students to class after more than two weeks of walkout.

  • On Thursday the Alberta government served formal notice that it would introduce Bill 2, the Back to School Act, via an order paper on the Alberta Legislature website, with Finance Minister Nate Horner set to table it Monday.
  • Since Oct. 6, about 51,000 public, separate and francophone school teachers have been on strike during the legislature summer break, leaving roughly 750,000 students out of classrooms.
  • Jason Schilling, president of the Alberta Teachers' Association, said the union expected legislation was possible but that it still made him angry.
  • The Alberta government will introduce the bill on Monday, though when it will pass and schools will reopen remains unclear, and Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said it's too soon to say when children will return.
  • Smith and other officials previously suggested back-to-work legislation could come the week of Oct. 27, while Opposition Leader Naheed Nenshi condemned the move and thousands rallied Oct. 16 outside Rogers Place.
