Meet the Miniature Horses Who Escaped and Wandered Into a Local Road Race in Vermont
Three miniature horses escaped their fencing and ran ahead of the leader before neighbors safely corralled them, organizers said.
On Saturday, three miniature horses—Hazel, Lady Bird, and Birdie—from Aspen East Stables escaped their fencing and joined a 5-mile road race in Jericho, Vermont, around 19 miles outside Burlington.
Boarder Molly Yanus believes Lady Bird masterminded the escape by sliding under the fence, leading the group across Browns River—a crossing that shocked stable staff since the horses had never crossed that river before.
While leading the 'Pump it Up!' 5-mile race, runner Neil Graves encountered the horses and said, "They didn't hear me coming until I was about on them, so they bolted just a little bit, and then people started corralling them."
Neighbors helped return the horses safely, and the stables awarded all three ribbons for their sprint to the finish. Yanus said, "Once being successful, they will definitely try it again," noting the trio attempted escape three more times.
Photos by Green Mountain Athletic Association President Nicholas Ponzio captured the friendly encounter, which participant Katie Merrick said made friends out of state want to visit Vermont, calling it "a different type of traffic problem to have.
