Between the Notes: Roger McGuinn in Malibu — A life told in songs
McGuinn kept playing through persistent audio issues while recounting his career in songs, including one of rock music’s most recognizable sounds.
Despite persistent sound problems at Smothers Theatre, Roger McGuinn performed solo that evening, though muddy vocals made some of his stories hard to follow.
McGuinn performed alone, surrounded by instruments representing different chapters of his career: a five-string banjo, a Martin 12-string, his custom Martin HD-7, and the blonde Rickenbacker 12-string.
The concert traced his path from teenage music student in Chicago to the Byrds, starting guitar at 14 and learning from Bob Gibson at the Old Town School of Folk Music.
Recalling his 1987 tour with Bob Dylan and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, McGuinn performed his theme song, Dylan's "My Back Pages," and discussed writing "King of the Hill."
The audience remained engaged despite technical challenges; when the crowd joined the chorus, the room suddenly sounded wonderful, revealing the enduring connection between the folk rock architect and his fans.
