Best US cities for veterans: Data reveals top places for jobs, housing and healthcare

WalletHub said Austin led 100 cities on education, jobs and income as veterans nationwide still face housing and health care challenges.

  • Austin, Texas ranked as the best U.S. city for veterans in a study by personal finance website WalletHub, citing superior educational and employment opportunities. The Texas capital leads with top-tier colleges for veterans and ranks seventh in job growth, with median annual income exceeding $66,000.
  • WalletHub evaluated the 100 most populated U.S. cities across 19 measures in four categories: employment, economy, quality of life, and health. Nearly 17.2 million veterans call the United States home, often facing significant challenges transitioning from military to civilian life.
  • Madison, Wisconsin, took second place with veterans seeing average annual median income growth of about 8%, while Scottsdale, Arizona, ranked third with median veteran income of about $68,000 and one of the lowest veteran homelessness rates among cities studied.
  • "The best cities for veterans have all these characteristics, plus added bonuses like large veteran populations for community support," said Chip Lupo, WalletHub analyst. He emphasized that access to quality health care and employment opportunities remain essential for those returning home.
  • Financial instability remains a concern as more than 26,000 veterans face higher monthly mortgage payments after the Trump administration eliminated the Veterans Affairs Servicing Purchase program. Many veterans now see monthly increases of $1,000 or more, complicating post-service financial stability.
