Officer Shot in Belleville Synagogue Attack Released From Hospital

Police say Jeff Smith is recovering at home after being shot while confronting a gunman in a hate-motivated attack on a synagogue.

  • On Thursday, the Belleville Police Service announced that Constable Jeff Smith has been released from hospital. "Smith continues to make positive progress in his recovery. He has been released from hospital and is recovering well at home," police said.
  • Smith was stationed outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue during Yom Kippur on September 20, 2026, when he was ambushed. The attacker, Sean Ward, was a 29-year-old former Canadian Armed Forces soldier.
  • Returning fire despite multiple gunshot wounds, Smith held his position until Constable Mike McCurdy arrived. Ward was fatally injured during the exchange and died in hospital the next day; McCurdy sustained no injuries.
  • Belleville Police Chief Murray Rodd stated Ward "had the means, the mechanism and the motive to perpetrate a greater act." Police found combustible materials in the shooter's vehicle, corroborating the intent to attack.
  • The Special Investigations Unit is conducting an independent investigation into the officers' conduct, as is customary. Smith and his family remain grateful for overwhelming community support during his recovery.
