Bedbugs force closure of prestigious Paris cinema

  • The Cinematheque Francaise said Friday it will temporarily close its four screening halls for a month following reported bedbug sightings and audience complaints after a Sigourney Weaver master class at its eastern Paris venue.
  • National health authorities note the French government launched a 2023 campaign to fight bedbugs in public transport, cinemas and hospitals, citing psychological distress and allergic reactions as public-health concerns ahead of the 2024 Olympics.
  • The institution said seats will be dismantled and treated multiple times with dry steam at 180C, with carpets receiving the same treatment before systematic checks by dogs.
  • The closure will disrupt screenings and some classes, while other areas, including the Orson Welles exhibition, remain open as organisers aim to guarantee viewers a safe environment.
  • Eyewitness reports in early November described complaints of bites after a master class and bedbugs seen on `the seats and clothes`, Le Parisien said, while officials warned disinformation amplified public panic.
