Becerra, Hilton tangle over ‘Trump, Trump, Trump’ in California governor debate
Becerra tied Hilton to Trump while Hilton pushed tax cuts, housing fee caps and a break from decades of Democratic rule.
On Wednesday, Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton faced off in their only scheduled gubernatorial debate, with Becerra repeatedly linking Hilton to President Donald Trump throughout the event.
Replacing term-limited Governor Gavin Newsom, the candidates offered starkly different visions: Hilton attacked what his campaign calls "The Machine" of Democratic control, while Becerra emphasized his experience in state and federal government.
Hilton proposed capping construction fees at $50,000 and eliminating state income taxes on the first $150,000 of income, while Becerra argued the cuts would disproportionately benefit the wealthy and damage state services.
Heated exchanges erupted over homelessness and immigration, with Becerra accusing Trump of withholding $30 billion from California for disaster relief, while Hilton criticized the state's failure to address what he called an "absolute scandal."
Frustrated by the persistent Trump focus, Hilton exclaimed, "All you ever say is 'Trump, Trump, Trump,'" as the candidates concluded their final opportunity to reach voters before the November election.
