Hack at Beacon Mutual Exposed Sensitive Data of 131K Rhode Islanders; Lawsuit Filed
The company said files with names and sensitive identifiers were copied, and it is offering credit monitoring through Experian to some affected customers.
On May 18, The Beacon Mutual Insurance Company began notifying 162,000 customers of a January ransomware attack that exposed sensitive personal information including Social Security numbers.
Beacon Mutual discovered unauthorized activity on January 14, 2026, and immediately isolated systems to contain the threat after an intruder accessed files between January 7 and January 14.
The incident impacted 131,027 individuals in Rhode Island and 11,890 in Massachusetts, including thousands of state employees; Beacon Mutual offers affected customers complimentary identity theft protection through Experian.
Attorney Peter Wasylyk filed a class action lawsuit Friday on behalf of state worker Aria DiMeo, alleging the company failed to implement reasonable security procedures and seeking lifetime credit monitoring.
Individuals are advised to review credit reports and financial account statements for unauthorized activity, as the lawsuit warns exposed data could enable identity fraud including fraudulent accounts and false tax returns.
