BDC Boosts Defence Platform up to $6B After Providing $92M in Financing Since Late December, Names StrongNorth Fund Leader
BDC has increased its Defence Platform to $6 billion, providing $91.7 million to 16 Canadian SMEs and startups to boost sovereign defence capabilities and scale supply chains.
- On March 12, 2026, the Business Development Bank of Canada announced it is expanding its defence platform to $6 billion to support Canadian SMEs.
- First unveiled in December as a $4-billion platform, the Business Development Bank of Canada increased funding by $2 billion after talks with the Department of National Defence and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada to prepare for a 2027–28 procurement peak.
- BDC says uptake has been strong, with $91.7 million deployed to 16 firms, including Wolf Advanced Technology Canada Inc., which received $4 million in growth capital.
- BDC will use both direct financing and indirect ecosystem investments to help Canadian firms scale, integrate into global defence supply chains, and boost economic resilience and sovereignty.
- BDC will co-host a strategic forum on April 2 with the Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan Montreal to help companies learn about defence opportunities and will deploy a survey soon to assess ecosystem needs, with negotiations to create an international Defence, Security and Resilience Bank beginning later this month.
