B.C.’s Premier Designate Plans to Speak with Whitecaps About Future in Vancouver
Lorne Doerkson says he will talk with the Major League Soccer club as its lease at BC Place expires after the 2027 sprint season.
On Sunday, Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson said he plans to discuss the future of the Vancouver Whitecaps after his party won two-thirds of the province's 93 ridings.
The Whitecaps have been for sale since December 2024, with ownership citing revenue limitations because the team does not own the 55,000-seat BC Place, operated by a provincial Crown corporation.
CEO Axel Schuster confirmed last month the club extended its lease at BC Place through the 2027 "sprint season," though the team's long-term future remains unclear.
While Doerkson admitted "I don't know the plan going forward," he emphasized British Columbia's strong support for the Whitecaps and his intention to engage with the club.
Major League Soccer will transition to a summer-to-spring calendar starting in July 2027, affecting all 30 teams and adding complexity to the Whitecaps' uncertain future.
