B.C. sailors tell of harrowing choices in rescue of charter sinking survivors
A Coast Guard hovercraft responded to a vessel capsizing near Richmond, B.C., on June 28, 2026, with some people not wearing life jackets.
Boat owners Dorothy Stauffer and Brian Angus saw five people in the water but could only rescue three close to them due to conditions and a language barrier.
Four people were rescued in total, while six others remained missing after the search was called off that night.
Rescuers and sailors informed Stauffer and Angus that saving three people was the best they could do under the circumstances.
