B.C. police watchdog seeks public assistance in Island investigation

The watchdog is reviewing whether police action or inaction caused the injury and is asking for witnesses or video from the arrest.

  • The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is investigating how a man sustained an injury during his arrest in Sooke on March 23 after Sooke RCMP officers responded to a residence near Otter Point Park.
  • Officers arrived around 6:30 p.m. after the property owner requested police remove the man, who allegedly refused to leave the residence, leading to a police interaction during which he sustained an injury before arrest.
  • The IIO's investigative mandate requires establishing two conditions: an injury meeting the 'serious harm' threshold under the Police Act or a death, and a connection between that harm and police action or inaction.
  • Notified three days after the incident, the IIO is seeking witnesses and video evidence through its witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or website iiobc.ca to support the ongoing investigation.
  • Investigators will review all available evidence to determine what occurred during the arrest, and the chief civilian director will ultimately decide whether reasonable grounds exist to believe an offence may have been committed.
