BC NDP promise to develop 6th floor at Kelowna General Hospital
The pledge is part of a costed platform funded by higher taxes on top earners, the party said, as patient-capacity concerns persist.
On Tuesday, Oct. 20, BC NDP leader David Eby pledged $30 million to build out the sixth floor of Kelowna General Hospital if re-elected, stating the project is fully costed within their platform.
Planning for the expansion began before the election, with NDP MLA candidates Loyal Wooldridge, Binny Boparai, and George Morgan advocating for the investment from Statement 0 and 15.
The NDP plans to fund the pledges by increasing income tax for top earners making $1 million or more, while other regional pledges include $20 million for YLW Airport infrastructure and $90 million for 75 involuntary care spaces in Oliver.
BC Conservative MLA candidate Gavin Dew called the pledge a "desperate 11th-hour tour trying to salvage his job," noting patients have laid in more than 50 hallway beds while hospital space remained unfinished for a decade.
Voters head to the polls for the Provincial Election this Saturday, Oct. 24, as local candidates debate long-term capacity issues facing the Okanagan region amid a stretched healthcare system.
