B.C. crews use drone in controlled burn during wildfire fight, in Canadian first
BC Wildfire Service says the drone-ignited burn improved safety and precision as crews worked to contain the Brunswick Creek blaze.
- On Sunday, the BC Wildfire Service successfully used a drone to ignite a controlled burn near Boston Bar, marking Canada's first drone-based wildfire ignition. Crews triggered the burn on the south flank of the Brunswick Creek wildfire to contain the blaze.
- Both the Brunswick Creek and Ainslie Creek fires remain out of control, covering over 20,000 hectares as of Tuesday. The uncontrolled blazes have forced 450 properties in the Fraser Valley Regional District under evacuation orders.
- Operations section chief Arlen Kanary said the drone can "safely and precisely ignite targeted fuels" using infrared cameras to navigate heavy smoke. This innovation improves crew safety over traditional helicopter-based ignition methods using PSDs.
- BCWS called the operation a "critical step" in securing the east flank of the Brunswick Creek blaze. The controlled burn aims to reduce risk of fire spotting across the Fraser River.
- With significant fire season remaining, Incident commander Jeff Walsh noted crews face challenging terrain and weather while maintaining 24-hour operations. The team continues positioning resources to protect high-value areas throughout the remainder of the fire season.
