BC Coroners Service launches inquiry into Abbotsford inmate death
The public inquest will examine whether custodial practices contributed to the inmate’s methadone overdose death, which occurred nearly five years ago.
- Nearly five years after the death of an inmate at Pacific Institution, the BC Coroners Service recently announced an official inquest beginning Sept. 28 at the Burnaby Coroners Court.
- Kendal Campeau was three years into a seven-year sentence when he died from a methadone overdose on Nov. 14, 2021, after transferring to Abbotsford from Saskatchewan.
- Campeau, a member of the Yellow Quill First Nation, was serving time for robbery and assault; according to Prisoners Legal Services, he was found unresponsive in his cell on Nov. 14, 2021.
- The Coroners Service stated such inquests are often launched when a death results from dangerous practices or could lead to similar deaths without intervention.
- Doing an inquiry this long after the incident is not unusual, as the Coroners Service recently announced two other inquiries for deaths that occurred in 2021 or earlier.
