BC Conservatives say Massey Bridge plan would pay for new hospital
Lorne Doerkson says the bridge would cost $6 billion and free up $2.5 billion for a new women and children’s hospital.
On Friday, Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson proposed replacing the planned Fraser River tunnel with a 10-lane George Massey Bridge, estimating $6 billion in costs and a five-year timeline to free $2.5 billion for a new women and children's hospital.
Construction on the eight-lane Fraser River Tunnel Project, approved in 2021, is already underway with 200 workers on site while holding a $3 billion federal investment secured earlier this year.
NDP Leader David Eby criticized the bridge pledge Thursday as "lunacy," warning that abandoning active tunnel construction would jeopardize the $3 billion federal investment and waste significant public funds.
Trade unions including the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 115 and LiUNA Local 1611 warned that halting the project would mean "wasting" $581 million already spent on site preparation and temporary infrastructure.
Brushing off criticism on Friday, Doerkson asserted his administration would work closely with the federal government to retain funding while arguing the bridge offers a "more affordable" and faster alternative.
