BC Conservative leader promises support for forest industry during Lower Mainland campaign announcement
Doerkson promised faster permits, lower costs and a 45 million cubic metre annual cut as he pitched a forestry revival plan.
On Monday, BC Conservative Party Leader Lorne Doerkson announced forestry job supports at Waldun Forest Products in Maple Ridge, in the riding of incumbent candidate Lawrence Mok.
Doerkson cited the loss of about 15,000 forestry jobs over the last four years and the permanent closure of at least 21 lumber mills since 2023 under the BC NDP.
The Conservative leader pledged to establish a major-project-style process for forestry permits, reducing approval timelines to months while setting a minimum annual harvest of 45 million cubic metres.
His platform includes eliminating unnecessary permitting costs and creating competitive tax conditions for value-added wood manufacturers, alongside investing in Indigenous skills training and ensuring First Nations benefit from federal funding.
Accusing the BC NDP of deploying 'roadblocks' and 'red tape' to stifle industry potential, Doerkson aims to restore the sector's historical success in the Cariboo region, where he is from.
