B.C. Bringing in Wildfire Reinforcements
BC Wildfire Service is drawing on local and outside crews as 138 active fires force evacuation orders and alerts across the province.
- As 135 active wildfires burned across B.C. on Monday, the province announced that personnel from Yukon Protective Services, Alberta Wildfire, and Mexico are set to arrive in the coming days to strengthen response capacity.
- Since last week's lightning storms, heat, drought, and dry conditions have created perfect conditions for wildfires to burn aggressively, with the Brunswick Wildfire Complex burning approximately 350 square kilometres as of Saturday.
- The Anderson Creek and Ainslie Creek fires merged Thursday night, growing to 10,118.4 and 17,999.2 hectares respectively; of 135 fires burning, 57 are deemed out of control, forcing evacuation orders for 1,300 properties with 6,650 under alert.
- Local fire departments from Vancouver Island, including The Errington Fire and Lake Cowichan Fire Department, deployed volunteers Friday for structure protection, while B.C. Wildfire Service deploys 885 personnel, 163 aircraft and 125 heavy equipment.
- B.C. is pulling in extra firefighting aircraft from across Canada, including one Q400 airtanker, three heavy helicopters, and three Quebec CL-415 super scoopers; 114 Mexican personnel will arrive August 3 to further strengthen response capacity.
