US fines Air France, KLM over flights in prohibited Iraqi airspace
USDOT said the airlines flew dozens of Delta-code flights in Iraqi airspace below FAA limits and must pay $265,000 within 60 days.
- On Friday, the Transportation Department fined Air France and KLM $425,000 for operating dozens of flights in prohibited Iraqi airspace while carrying Delta Air Lines' code share.
- The Federal Aviation Administration prohibits flights below 32,000 feet over Iraq to protect aircraft from ground threats; foreign airlines operating U.S. carrier codes must comply with these restrictions.
- Between early 2022 and 2025, Air France operated more than 30 flights and KLM operated more than 100 flights through the restricted airspace, according to USDOT.
- Both airlines claimed local air traffic controllers instructed them to descend, arguing the flights should have fallen under the "emergency situations" exemption given safety risks.
- The carriers must pay $265,000 of the $425,000 fine within 60 days, with the remainder payable if additional violations occur within one year.
