Barry hepatitis A cases prompt warning to parents
Public Health Wales is warning parents of primary school children in Barry after identifying a cluster of Hepatitis A cases across three separate households in the Welsh seaside town.
Health experts suggest the infection may be spreading locally, prompting investigation. Hepatitis A is a viral infection affecting the liver that typically causes mild illness, from which most people make a full recovery.
Susan Mably, Consultant in Health Protection for Public Health Wales, stated the best prevention is to "wash hands thoroughly with soap and water." Those feeling unwell should contact their GP or NHS 111 Wales.
As a precaution, Public Health Wales has offered vaccinations to close contacts and contacted everyone identified as needing one. Those infected are "receiving appropriate care and are recovering well."
Around 20 cases of Hepatitis A are reported in Wales each year, often linked to travel to countries where the virus is more common. Residents do not need to request a vaccine unless traveling to such countries.
