Bari Weiss and CBS News Staff Reportedly Disagree Over Coverage of Alaska Ballot Scandal
Staffers said the Alaska ballot story was routine politics, while Weiss pressed CBS News to pursue similar election maneuvers, insiders said.
On Thursday, CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss faced "significant resistance" from staff at a 9 a.m. meeting after urging coverage of the Alaska ballot controversy, network insiders told Fox News Digital.
The controversy centers on reports that allies of Mary Peltola's campaign recruited a second Dan Sullivan to run against Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, a tactic Weiss characterized as a "scandal."
Several staffers pushed back on the focus, with CBS Mornings Correspondent Ed O'Keefe noting such tactics "could be a dirty trick, but it's not illegal," while Margaret Brennan cited New Hampshire Senate candidate John Sununu as precedent.
Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy has ordered an investigation into the issue, while the Justice Department sued to block certification if votes for the other Sullivan could have altered the outcome.
Producers previously expressed management concerns during assignments for "60 Minutes," suggesting this dispute is not the first time a story has run into turmoil under Weiss.
