‘Money out of politics’ proposal cleared for Michigan ballot
The measure would bar political spending by regulated utilities and large contractors, after petitioners submitted 561,282 signatures, officials said.
- On Friday, the bipartisan Board of State Canvassers voted 3-1 to certify petition signatures for a ballot measure targeting political spending by DTE Energy, Consumers Energy, and large government contractors.
- Attorneys and officials spent Friday reviewing petitions for the proposal, which opponents at Protect MI Free Speech called 'sloppy.' Attorney Gary Gordon argued supporters 'gamed the system' by filing far more than the 356,958 required signatures.
- Democratic Canvasser Heather Cummings compared the rigorous review to 'hanging chads' from the 2000 Florida election. Canvassers validated 645 signatures in a 1,000-signature sample, just nine above the 636 threshold recommended for approval.
- Under the state constitution, the Legislature now has 40 days to decide whether to enact the measure as law without a public vote. If lawmakers take no action, the proposal will appear on the November ballot.
- The Board must still approve a 100-word summary before the initiative reaches voters. Protect MI Free Speech spokesperson John Sellek indicated the opposition may pursue legal action to block the proposal.
