A Private Equity Company Has Acquired Balatro Publisher, Playstack
Trufin Holdings plans to sell 84.5% of Playstack to Integrated Media Company’s new subsidiary, a deal that would expand its indie game portfolio.
- On May 21, Trufin Holdings announced plans to sell an 84.5 percent interest in Playstack to VantageCo Limited, a subsidiary of Integrated Media Company, for $151 million, pending shareholder approval.
- Owned by private equity firm TPG Inc., Integrated Media Company manages 15 media brands including Fandom, Curse, and GameSpot, expanding its portfolio into video game publishing with this acquisition.
- Playstack publishes the hit game Balatro, which sold over five million copies as of January 2025, while maintaining a release hit ratio of more than 85 percent across titles like The Case of the Golden Idol and Ak-xolotl.
- In a statement, CEO Harvey Elliott said, "Our team, our strategy, and our commitment to publishing premium indie games remain exactly the same. For now, it."
- Similar to when IGN Entertainment acquired Humble Bundle, this deal reflects industry consolidation; that prior acquisition led to laying off 36 people in 2024.
