‘Bad Asians’ author Lillian Li says a bookstore helped her choose where to live
Li says four years at the shop helped shape her sense of place and kept her close to the community that inspired her novel.
Lillian Li, author of Bad Asians, lives in Ann Arbor, not far from the independent bookstore where she spent four years working.
After graduating from college, Li wrote her debut novel Bad Asians, using a working title for six years before eventually settling on the current name.
The novel features characters described as "Gifted and Talented," who grapple with the pressures of being high-achieving, a core conflict the title Bad Asians indicates to readers.
Bookstore staff found the novel meaningful enough to gift to co-workers, while Book Club members remain devoted to the work, with Li expressing love for every sentence.
Following Grace, childhood friends Diana, Vivian, Errol, and Justin weave their stories together, drifting apart yet held together by the specter of their shared past.
