Italian Court Orders New Extradition Hearing for Dave Turmel of Blood Family Mafia
Dave Turmel will stay in Rome’s Regina Coeli prison as his lawyer appeals an earlier extradition order to Canada.
An Italian court ordered a new extradition hearing for Dave Turmel, the alleged Blood Family Mafia leader who was Canada's most-wanted fugitive until his 2025 arrest.
Italian authorities apprehended Turmel in 2025 following a tip from Quebec City police after he spent more than 600 days on the run; courts initially authorized his extradition to Canada in March 2026.
Charges against Turmel include drug trafficking, conspiracy, and assault related to the Blood Family Mafia's violent turf war in Quebec against the Hells Angels.
Lawyer Danièle Roy confirmed her client successfully appealed the extradition order and will remain detained in Rome's Regina Coeli prison while proceedings continue.
Roy noted the process "could be very long, and could even take years," explaining that Italy lacks a "Jordan decision" requirement mandating trials conclude within 30 months like in Quebec.
