Axel Springer open to role in any potential European TikTok deal, spokesperson says
The publisher said it would back a European sale of TikTok’s operations, echoing the U.S. deal that moved control away from ByteDance.
- On Thursday, German publishing group Axel Springer said it would welcome a European initiative to separate TikTok from its Chinese owner, ByteDance, mirroring President Donald Trump's deal to transfer the app's American operations to a joint venture.
- ByteDance finalized a deal in January to transfer TikTok's American operations to an American-owned joint venture, aiming to avert a ban in America and allay security concerns for the platform popular with over 200 million Americans.
- During a January meeting in Berlin, Axel Springer CEO Mathias Doepfner pitched a European TikTok division concept to Charles Kushner, the American Ambassador to France, after initially discussing antisemitism in social media.
- Doepfner has previously called TikTok "one of the most dangerous propaganda machines for amplifying extremist content" during a May speech at the World Jewish Congress in Geneva while advocating for curbs on antisemitism.
- A company spokesperson told Reuters that Axel Springer would have welcomed participation in a European solution, noting that Doepfner has consistently advocated for an arrangement similar to the American model.
