Heidi Alexander Says Avanti West Coast Will Enter Public Ownership in March
The government said the move will include an improvement plan and £50 million in upgrades at Euston to cut delays and improve service.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander announced Avanti West Coast will enter public ownership in March, when the operator's current contract expires on March 7.
For years, passengers have endured cancellations and overcrowding on Avanti West Coast services; Alexander stated the operator has been "underperforming," with the hated "scrum" at London Euston to be phased out within a year.
The Government pledged £50 million for London Euston upgrades over three years, with £840 million committed to West Coast Main Line infrastructure improvements and an extra £10 million for other stations.
Managing Director Andy Mellors said the operator would "work closely with the government to ensure a seamless transition into public ownership while remaining focused on delivering for our customers and communities."
This move reflects the Labour Government's commitment to nationalisation; Great British Railways is expected to take full control by 2027, with CrossCountry and East Midlands Railway remaining outside public ownership.
