Authorities investigate disruption of OCTOBER 7 play
CAAN says the alarm caused panic and evacuation, and it has asked federal agencies and county prosecutors to investigate the disruption.
On Oct. 6, an unknown individual pulled a fire alarm during a performance of the play "OCTOBER 7" at Northwestern University's Cahn Auditorium, forcing an evacuation. The event, hosted by Northwestern Hillel, dramatized verbatim testimony from survivors of the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks in Israel.
Producer Phelim McAleer reported the alarm sounded with about 20 minutes remaining, causing audience members to fear a shooting or bombing. Attendee Danielle Pearl said many sat frozen, unable to distinguish the alarm from the performance until ordered to evacuate.
McAleer noted the play ran previously at Princeton and UCLA without incident, making Northwestern the only location where the performance faced disruption. The Coalition Against Antisemitism is now seeking a formal investigation.
CAAN referred the case to the U.S. Departments of Justice, Education, and Health and Human Services, and submitted a complaint to the Cook County State's Attorney's Office Hate Crimes Unit. Authorities have requested footage of the night.
This incident follows an earlier request by the Brandeis Center for the DOJ to investigate whether Northwestern's financial relationship with the Qatar Foundation violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act. The foundation reportedly paid the university $737 million for its Doha satellite campus.
