Austrian skier Scheib takes World Cup GS for her 3rd win of the season. Shiffrin places 6th
Scheib secured her third giant slalom win this season and leads the World Cup standings by 88 points after main rival Alice Robinson failed to finish.
- On Saturday, Julia Scheib won a World Cup giant slalom at Semmering near Vienna, beating Camille Rast by 0.14 and Sara Hector by 0.40 seconds in her third GS win this season.
- In the final run, Scheib trailed Rast until the last split but overtook her, while Alice Robinson, fastest in the opening run, skied out and failed to score.
- Mikaela Shiffrin finished sixth, 1.45 seconds behind Scheib, and has not been on a GS podium in her past 10 GS races despite holding 22 career victories.
- With the Olympic season approaching, Scheib's three wins this season make her a strong medal contender for the Feb. 15 Olympic giant slalom race after ending the Austria women's team drought last October.
- A slalom on Sunday is scheduled for the Semmering hill, while U.S. teammates Nina O'Brien and Paula Moltzan suffered crashes but apparently avoided injuries.
