Work to Start on $300m Muswellbrook Solar and Battery Project

The 135 MW solar farm and 100 MW battery will power up to 52,310 homes and create up to 200 construction jobs.

  • Clean energy developer OX2 reached financial close on the $302 million Muswellbrook Solar Farm and Battery project, with construction beginning immediately for a 2028 operational target.
  • The 482-hectare development features 300,000 solar panels and a 100 MW BESS, capable of powering up to 52,310 homes via the existing Ausgrid 132 kV transmission grid.
  • Idemitsu Australia remains a long-term landholder, while the OX2-appointed joint venture BYESSA will handle construction and the developer contributes about $115,000 annually to the Community Benefit Sharing Program.
  • OX2 Australia vice president Stephen Symons said the company is "delivering on our long-term commitment to Australia," while Idemitsu Australia chief executive officer Steve Kovac welcomed the partnership to "transform Australia's energy system."
  • Located 2.5km east of Muswellbrook in the Hunter Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone, the project represents a shift toward clean energy, distinct from a separate pumped hydro feasibility study being explored by AGL and Idemitsu.
