AFP Defends Roberts-Smith Arrest as Media Leak Probed
AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett says the agency found no evidence it tipped off media and referred the leak matter to anti-corruption investigators.
AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett defended the April 7 arrest of former soldier Ben Roberts-Smith at Sydney Airport, while launching an investigation into how media outlets obtained advance details of the operation.
Roberts-Smith faces five charges of war crime murder in Afghanistan, prompting authorities to arrest him after receiving information he planned to travel overseas.
Rejecting claims of jury influence, Barrett explained the airport provided a "sterile environment" for safety, with officers aware he was traveling with family and additional personnel deployed to assist them.
The National Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating the leak, with Barrett stating, "This could be an unauthorised disclosure and in my view anyone who disclosed that information should face consequences."
While Roberts-Smith categorically denies the allegations, Liberal senator Michaelia Cash and One Nation senator Malcolm Roberts questioned the arrest's handling, citing concerns about his daughters' presence.
